Introduction to Bela-Bela

Long before the mineral waters at Bela-Bela were used therapeutically – the curative waters have often been described as nature’s gift to humankind – they were discovered by the Batswana in the 1800s and named Bela-Bela, meaning “boiling-boiling”.With the wealth of inexpensive accommodation on offer as well as several timeshare facilities to choose from, Bela-Bela is becoming an increasingly popular destination.

Offering fun for the whole family and a respite from the pressures of day-to-day living, Bela-Bela is perfect for the weekend or even a one-day getaway.

The town, formerly known as “Warmbaths”, owes its origins to the hot mineral springs that bubble out of the earth at about 22,000 l/hr at a temperature of approximately 53 °C. Said water is rich in minerals such as sodium chloride, calcium carbonate and other salts, and is has curative properties – restoring sanity and a sense of wellbeing to all who holiday in Bela-Bela.

The pleasantly mild climate during the winter months and an average of 286 sunny days every year add to the popularity of the destination. The town is just over an hour’s drive from Gauteng and lies on the Spingbok Flats on the highway to the north. Bela-Bela is also a gateway to the southern Waterberg and Thabazimbi.

Bela-Bela serves a thriving tourism and agricultural region. It has some well-stocked game reserves in the area. Most of the resorts offer excellent conference, sport, accommodation, recreation and restaurant facilities. Some of the reserves boast the ‘Big Five’ and countless other savannah species against a backdrop of scenic Waterberg countryside. A visit to Bela-Bela provides a unique and invigorating family holiday in the heart of the Waterberg.

 Naming and Foundation

Bela-Bela is Northern-Sotho for “Boiling-Boiling” and the name of the town is synonymous with the town’s world famous hot water springs, which were discovered in the 1800’s. The town was previously also known by the name of Warmbaths or Warmbad.

Bela-Bela is one of the most popular health and holiday resort town in South Africa, which owes its origin to the hot mineral springs that bubble at about 22 000 liter’s per hour with a temperature of around 53° C. The natural hot water is rich in sodium chloride, calcium carbonate and other salts that are believed to have healing properties. Local economic development requires acceptable levels of infrastructure to thrive. It includes the development of roads in Bela-Bela. An integrated transport plan needs to be developed and financed for implementation. Public transport issues relating to taxi, bus, rail, etc. must also be addressed.

Internal roads under the authority of Bela-Bela Municipality (in terms of municipal roads classification) should be maintained to a high standard. Bela-Bela has a landing strip which presents an opportunity to be developed to a level where it can accommodate charter planes. There are tourists who prefer to fly to Bela-Bela. This may in the longer term trigger a plan for airport development to cater for tourists from abroad and local.

Infrastructure provision such as water, sanitation, waste management, communication, electricity, etc. should support tourism facilities such as hotels, game lodges and golf estates as far as possible. Bela-Bela Town’s development should be the first priority in terms of municipal infrastructure provision. This will assist local business to thrive and attract more tourists and have agricultural products transported to markets, processed and exported to other countries.

Infrastructure development should be provided in time and maintained regularly. The service industry strives within an environment where there are good roads, communication, electricity, water, and sanitation networks. These and other issues will make the environment conducive to do business and create jobs and grow the local economy.
