Role Overview:
- Assist patrons by guiding them to their seats and various venue areas
- Support general Front of House duties
- Represent the theatre professionally and courteously
- Help maintain a safe and welcoming atmosphere for guests
Requirements:
- Matric (Grade 12) or higher qualification
- Physically able to perform the role
- No prior experience necessary, full training provided

The South African State Theatre saw the birth of, and was the driving force, behind the establishment of the performing arts in all spheres in South Africa. The State Theatre, with its six theatres, ranging from the opulent Opera Theatre, to the cabaret feel of the Intimate Theatre, today plays a leading role in the development of the performing arts, and is host to the colourful variety of entertainment found in the diverse cultures of our wonderful country.
The opening of the theatre complex in May 1981 was a milestone in South African theatre and marked the beginning of great things to come. In 2000 The State Theatre re-opened as a receiving house and has been host to blockbuster shows like Cats, Sarafina!, The Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, Rhetorical, Esther and Rivonia Trail, to name but a few. The South African State Theatre, centrally situated in the country’s capital, Pretoria, is a driving force in the cultural life of the capital and the country.
The South African State Theatre (SAST), located in Pretoria, is one of the largest theatre complexes in Africa and a major performing arts venue. It hosts a wide variety of productions, including opera, ballet, drama, musicals, and children’s theatre, and also offers facilities for hire. The theatre plays a crucial role in the cultural life of South Africa and is committed to developing the performing arts sector and providing access to the arts for diverse audiences.
The theatre opened in 1981 and was instrumental in establishing performing arts in South Africa. Situated in the heart of Tshwane (Pretoria), it’s a distinctive landmark and one of the largest theatre complexes in Africa. It boasts multiple venues, including the Opera Theatre, Drama Theatre, Arena Theatre, Rendezvous Theatre, and the Intimate Theatre. The theatre presents a wide range of performances, including opera, ballet, drama, musicals, comedy, and traditional South African arts.
The SAST is dedicated to developing the performing arts sector, providing access to performance spaces for artists, and encouraging audience development through various programs. The theatre has embraced online streaming through SAST TV, making productions accessible to audiences across South Africa and internationally.
The theatre’s mission includes integrating social and cultural diversity, promoting artistic creativity, and providing opportunities for emerging artists. In December 2024, the SAST launched its streaming platform, SAST TV, marking a move into digital distribution of its performances.
Surrounded by high-rises and the capital’s hustle and bustle, the South African State Theatre in Pretoria certainly stands out. It’s architecturally distinctive and occupies an entire block in Pretoria’s city-centre. It was once the largest reception-venue of performing arts in the southern hemisphere.
The theatre staged its first show in 1981. Since then, it has featured a wide range of productions, including opera, ballet, drama, cabaret, musical and children’s-theatre performances.
In 2006, the South African State Theatre affirmed its position as the premier venue for large-scale productions, when its production of Swan Lake, by the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre, drew a packed house.
But Swan Lake is not the only headline show that the State Theatre has catered for. Many curtains have been lifted on world-class productions, including Cats, and South Africa’s own Sarafina!, a musical tour de force by impresario Mbongeni Ngema.
